In a Salty Stream

20:00 min, quadrophonic sound
Exists bilingually in English and Portuguese
Commissioned by nyMusikk, premiere at OnlyConnect Trondheim 2023

The composition is based on Particular Universal Artist in Residence program, as part of which I had the chance to spend time with Reserva Natural do Sapal de Castro Marim e Vila Real de Santo António—a natural salt marsh and bird reserve in Castro Marim, Portugal.

As part of the residency, I guided a participative soundwalk in the marshland, including an introduction into listening and soundwalking practices, reading, and discussion over fresh mint tea (locally harvested and prepared by André Portas).

The manuscript is inspired by the conversations I had with Luis Filipe & Miguel Silveira (marine biologists), Agostinho Gomes (birdwatcher), Rosa Madeira (ecologist/educator), Paulo Monteiro (Reserve vigilance ranger), and Pedro Pires (historian). It includes quotes from Rachel Carson’s The Edge of the Sea (1955) and The Sea Around Us (1951); the title In a Salty Stream comes from the last.
